This is my fifth Queen-related recipe & is inspired by one of my favorite Queen songs. I prefer the Queen deep cuts over the big Freddie-driven stadium hits. I believe Sheer Heart Attack is the best Queen album (with Queen 2 a close second), which is why it’s a mystery to me that the absolute banger that inspired this culinary abomination is on such a meh release as News Of The World. This is Queen being punk rock AF, driven by Roger Taylor’s always-welcome vocal talent. Sure, Taylor also gives us the gutsy bluesy “Fight From The Inside” & Freddie delivers a sexy dirty “Get Down Make Love,” but the rest of the album is filler for the hits “We Will Rock You” & “We Are The Champions.” Basically, News Of The World has a couple of redeeming tracks, but for the most part is unnecessary.
Which is why I chose to name this monstrosity after my favorite track on News of the World. This dog has a couple of redeeming elements – fried meat is good, fried meat with melted cheese is better – but unless you are drunk or stoned, this creation is absolutely unnecessary.
SHEER HEARY ATTACK
2 hot dogs, fried mortadella, fried salami, fried soppressata, fried pancetta, mozzarella, Parmesan, Calabrian chile, banana peppers, spicy mustard, hot honey
Makes 2 dogs
2 hot dogs
2 hot dog buns
2 slices pancetta
2 slices mortadella
2 slices salami
2 slices soppressata
4oz mozzarella, shredded
1oz parmesan, grated
Calabrian chile
Banana peppers
Spicy mustard
Hot honey
I mean, such as it is…
Preheat oven to 400°F
Fry a couple of slices of pancetta in a skillet.
While the pancetta is frying, cut a couple of slices each of mortadella, salami, & soppressata into thin strips. Shred some mozzarella & grate some parmesan
When the pancetta is crisp, transfer it to a paper towel-lined plate, leaving the fat in the skillet. Fry the sliced deli meat in the fat until lightly crisped. Remove the fried deli meat from the skillet, transfer to the plate with pancetta, & leave any fat in the skillet.
Fry 2 hot dogs in the deli meat fat until lightly blistered & slightly charred. Transfer to the plate with the deli meat.
Wipe out any remaining fat from the skillet.
Spread some Calabrian chili inside each bun. Place 2 hot dog buns in the skillet. Place a hot dog in each bun. Top with most of the mozz & 1/2 of the Parmesan. Drizzle with spicy mustard & top with the deli meat & remaining cheese.
Place the skillet with the dogs in the oven to bake until the cheese melts & gets bubbly. Switch to the broiler if you want a bit of color on the cheese.
Finish with a drizzle of hot honey & question your life choices.
