ABBA is the quintessential 70s band. They represent everything great about 70s pop while also being timeless. Over-the-top styling. Glitter ball aesthetics. A group made of two married couples mining their relationships for musical inspiration. The Swedish Fleetwood Mac with better pop melodies. If you do not believe ABBA is the greatest pop band in the history of music, you simply lack a soul. The theme here is not my favorite ABBA song (that would be “S.O.S.”), but it’s the only one that fits a hot dog pun. It’s also quite epically appropriate for a dish that literally “takes it all” in a brilliantly excessive way.

This is my take on Tunnbrödsrulle, a uniquely Swedish hot dog creation that makes the Chicago dog seem simple. Two hot dogs in a whole wheat wrap piled on with shrimp salad, mashed potatoes, & fried onions. I took a few liberties by subbing Buffalo chicken salad, added cheese to the mashed potatoes, & swapped crushed potato chips for fried onions. I was honestly dubious (as I’m betting you are), but this actually works brilliantly.

THE WIENER TAKES IT ALL
(aka Tunnbrödsrulle)
2 Hot dogs, cheesy mashed potato, Buffalo ranch chicken salad, pickle relish, crushed Sour Cream & Onion chips, hot honey mustard, Buffalo sauce, whole wheat wrap or flour tortilla
Makes 1 wrap

2 hot dogs
Cheesy mashed potatoes (see recipe below)
Buffalo chicken salad (see recipe below)
Buffalo sauce (see recipe below)
Hot honey mustard (see recipe below)
Pickle relish
Sour cream & onion potato chips, crushed
Whole wheat wrap

Char the hot dogs in a skillet. Spread mashed potato on the wrap. Place the dogs on the potatoes. On top of the dogs, layer chicken salad, pickle relish, buffalo sauce, & hot honey mustard. Sprinkle with the crushed chips & wrap.

Cheesy Mashed Potatoes
Makes about 2 cups

2 medium to large russet potatoes, peeled and diced
1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup cold butter, cubed
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup mozzarella, shredded

Peel and dice the potatoes. Place them in a large pot and cover them with water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and cook until tender, about 20-30 minutes.

Drain the potatoes and place them in a mixing bowl (or you can do this in the pot if you want).

Roughly mash potatoes with a potato masher or spoon. Add milk, butter, cheese, salt, & pepper. Mash again until everything is thoroughly mixed & the mixture is smooth.

Buffalo Ranch Chicken Salad
Makes about a quart

2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
2 stalks celery, minced
2 medium carrots, minced
3 scallions, sliced
2 tablespoons Buffalo sauce
2 tablespoons Ranch dressing

Place all ingredients in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly. Place in an airtight container & the rest in the fridge for at least an hour

Buffalo sauce
Makes about a cup

1/4 cup cayenne hot sauce
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 teaspoon Worcestershire
1/4 cup butter

Place everything but the butter in a medium bowl. Melt the butter in a small saucepan. Pour the melted butter into the bowl and blend until emulsified with a whisk or stick blender.

Hot honey mustard
2 tablespoons spicy mustard
1 tablespoon hot honey (or regular honey if that’s all you have)

Mix mustard & honey in a bowl.
