I actually once applied to be an operations assistant at Owl’s Brew but didn’t get the gig. They make a line of cocktail mixers based on tea blends. It’s a brilliant idea that honestly kind of pisses me off because I didn’t think of it.
When I gave up alcohol, I wanted to find soft cocktail alternatives that were more than just juice and soda. As I have a bit of an addiction to hibiscus, I chose the Owl’s Brew Pink & Black mixer – a blend of darjeeling and hibiscus tea with strawberry and lemon. It’s has the citrus bite of sorrel along with the lemon, a bit of fruitiness from the strawberry, and the darjeeling adds a bit of bitterness. Owl’s Brew recommends using it as a base for a Manhattan with citrus bitters.
For the Strange Brew (get it? Owl’s Brew – Strange Brew – Brew – oh never mind…), I subbed the bourbon with Bittermen’s ‘Elemakule Tiki Bitters for a rye spiciness and a bit of Woodford Reserve Spiced Cherry bitters to amp both the spice and fruitiness.
(To be clear, I do not get any compensation or consideration when I link to products or websites. I do it because I dig the things I use in my recipes. However, if anyone wants to get in touch…)
