This is the second Swig + Swallow mixer I picked up from the Bushwick Swig-O-Matic pop-up shop in the Mermaid Laundromat. I love their fresh ingredient philosophy – the “mix it in the bottle” design – and the not too sweet mixers. I just didn’t fall in love with the Moscow Mule.

Don’t get me wrong – it was good. Easily in the top five of pre-made Mule mixers. Not overly sugary. Perfect lime tartness. It was the ginger factor that lost me. As in – not enough ginger kick. My baseline Moscow Mule is served at Sweetwater Social on Broadway in lower Manhattan. It has the same balance of fresh lime juice and sweetness as Swig + Swallow,  but the ginger in Sweetwater’s mix kicks you in the nose – a spicy bite that brings it all together perfectly. It’s possible the ginger kick suffers from being bottled – it’s also possible I just love a VERY ginger-y Moscow Mule. Your mileage may vary.

Regardless, this still made a very nice grown-up soda with a kind of lime ginger ale feel. While I am not as big a fan of this as the Mojito mixer, it still represents a great alternative for Mindful Drinking adult beverages.

Swig + Swallow Moscow Mule mixer, Hudson Standard Ginger bitters, seltzer
Makes 2 drinks

Take two 12 ounce glasses and add 3 – 4 ice cubes. Divide the Moscow mule mixer between each glass – 2 ounces of mixer per glass. Top with cold seltzer. Stir. Float two droppers full of ginger bitters. Serve with lime wheel and candied ginger.
